View rate is the share of people shown a video who started watching it or watched up to a defined point. Platforms use different thresholds: some count three seconds, others half the content or the full length. That is why the threshold has to be checked before comparing across platforms.
In practice three cuts are read together: three seconds tells you whether the hook works, fifty percent whether the content holds interest, and completion whether the message reaches the end. Video length affects these rates directly, so putting videos of different lengths in the same table is misleading. In advertising this rate is an intermediate measure; the final call is made on conversion and cost.
View rate = Views past the threshold / Impressions x 100
If 2,640 people out of 12,000 impressions watched three seconds, the three-second view rate is 22%.
