What is Barcode Matching?

Barcode matching is the work of making sure the barcode values in a seller's catalog point to the same product across the marketplace, warehouse and accounting systems. When the match breaks, stock is deducted from the wrong item, orders are picked with the wrong product and a chain of returns begins.

Detail

The common root causes are the same barcode being assigned to more than one variant, or a supplier changing the product while keeping the barcode so that the weight quietly changes. On every shipment entering the warehouse, the scanned barcode should be checked on a sample basis against the product in the system. When integration software builds matching on barcodes, a single wrong row spreads wrong stock across every channel; that makes the barcode field the riskiest column in bulk updates.

Example

When a supplier turns a 3-pack into a 5-pack while keeping the same barcode, the system deducts 3 units, 5 go out of the warehouse, and stock drifts further from reality with every order.
