What is GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)?

GTIN is the numbering standard that identifies a trade item uniquely worldwide. It covers formats such as EAN-13, UPC and ISBN; marketplaces, Google Merchant Center and retail chains ask for this number in order to match products.

Detail

In Turkey, GTINs are generated from a company prefix obtained by becoming a member of GS1 Turkiye. Numbers bought in bulk online or generated at random may be accepted for a while, but they lead to listings being suspended during verification checks. A brand producing its own products has to obtain its own GTINs; a reseller selling someone else's brand uses the manufacturer's numbers. In Google Shopping ads, a missing GTIN cuts the product's impressions directly.

Example

A business producing 40 different items under its own brand obtains a company prefix from GS1 and assigns each variant a separate EAN-13 number starting with that prefix.
