What is GTIP Code (Turkish Customs Tariff Statistics Position)?

The GTIP code is the Customs Tariff Statistics Position number under which goods are classified at customs. Built on the Harmonized System, this code determines the product's duty rate, the required documents, quotas and restrictions; a wrong code produces both penalties and delays.

Detail

The code is chosen by the product's composition and function, not by its name; two textile products that look identical can fall into different positions if their fabric ratios differ. In export, a wrong GTIP means running into unexpected customs duty in the destination country and the buyer refusing the goods. The code also determines whether the destination country applies a preferential tariff; it has to be assessed together with the origin documents. When in doubt, a binding tariff information application can be filed.

Example

Two duvet cover sets with different cotton ratios can fall into different GTIP positions, and the duty rate in the destination country comes out differently as a result.
