What is Contract Manufacturing?

Contract manufacturing is having a product made in someone else's factory under the buyer's brand and specification. It is the way to reach an own-brand product without investing in machinery. Responsibility for quality stays with the business selling under its own brand, not with the factory; the party the consumer deals with is the one that commissioned the production.

Detail

The items that must be fixed in the contract are: technical specification, acceptance criteria, acceptable defect rate, penalties for delay, ownership of tooling and design, confidentiality, and an undertaking not to produce the same item for competitors. Paying for tooling and then leaving the tool in the factory's hands is a frequent and expensive problem in Turkey. Labeling, product safety documentation and category-specific permits are also the responsibility of the party placing the product on the market rather than the one making it; in cosmetics and food that distinction carries legal consequences.

Example

On a product where 3,000 dollars was paid for tooling, if ownership of that tooling is not in writing, changing manufacturers means paying for the tool a second time.
